![]() ![]() But first, the three friends will have to survive a group trip to Lake Champlain where it's said Vermont's very own Loch Ness monster lives. The smiling man loves his games and it seems a new one is under way. Only, there's no one there, just a cryptic note left outside signed simply as -S. So when the lights flicker on and off at Brian's family's inn and a boom sounds at the door, there's just one visitor it could be. And as the trio knows, the smiling man always keeps his promises. That was chilling promise made to Ollie, Coco and Brian after they outsmarted the smiling man at Mount Hemlock Resort. Synopsis: New York Times bestselling author Katherine Arden returns with another creepy, spine-tingling adventure in this follow-up to the critically acclaimed Small Spaces and Dead Voices. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reading that chapter amazed me to her sensitivity to the weather in the development of plots. ![]() Such a seemingly mundane subject helps drive the direction of many of her novels. Why is it important? Mullan discusses the impact of weather on Austen’s daily life, and then examines the weather’s impact on the characters and on the plot development within her novels. Take, for example, the question about the weather. It is in the minutiae that Austen shows her genius. Some of the questions include the following: What do the characters call each other, and why? What important characters never speak? How much does age matter? Who dies? and How experimental a novelist is Jane Austen? As Mullan answers these questions, he reveals the complexity that was Jane Austen’s world, but he also makes clear the ingenuity of Austen’s writing. In this volume, Mullan asks some questions of Austen’s texts and then answers them. But I hope that does not scare casual readers away from it, because What Matters in Jane Austen? is full of observations about the novels to help even the most casual of readers fall in love with Austen’s well crafted novels once more. What Matters in Jane Austen? by John Mullan (Bloomsbury, 2012) is a literary theory light book for the masses of Austenites around the globe. I may receive compensation for any purchased items. Last is the "narrowing of feminist politics and theory," which she defines to be a result of the "critique of essentialist identity politics and the hegemony of postmodern skepticism about identity" (6). In this book, Mohanty identifies three "problematic directions within U.S.-based feminisms." The first is the growing, largely class-based rift between activist feminism and university-based feminist theorizing, the latter being susceptible to careerism and a narrow professionalism. The essay, which quickly became part of the Women's Studies canon, is reprinted in Mohanty's latest book, Feminism without Borders: Decolonizing Theory, Practicing Solidarity. ![]() ![]() The publication of Chandra Talpade Mohanty's germinal essay, "Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and Colonial Discourses," made her a much admired and respected scholar, deeply influencing the thinking of many feminists, including myself. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sharp and impassioned, Detroit City Is the Place to Be is alive with the sense of possibility that comes when a city hits rock bottom. With an eye for both the darkly absurd and the radically new, Detroit-area native Mark Binelli has chronicled this convergence. Urban planners, land speculators, neopastoral agriculturalists, and utopian environmentalists-all have been drawn to Detroit's baroquely decaying, nothing-left-to-lose frontier. ![]() But the city's worst crisis yet (and that's saying something) has managed to do the unthinkable: turn the end of days into a laboratory for the future. As a Black woman and mental health advocate, I beg to differ. ![]() ![]() For generations, the Black community has associated constant adversity with a sign of strength. To unlearn these false narratives is to be awakening to a true sense of mental and emotional strength and freedom.
